SEATTLE – The Washington State women's soccer team (9-5-5, 2-4-5) lost, 0-2, to the Washington Huskies (9-5-5, 4-4-3) Friday evening at Husky Soccer Stadium. The Cougars were shutout for just the fourth time this season, despite putting up 15 total shots, including eight from senior
Margie Detrizio.
The Cougars looked threatening early, prodding the Washington backline for open alleys. The Huskies first-half goal came in the 15th minute from Tatum Thomason, after a long ball that switched the point of attack and left UW in a one-on-one situation.
WSU continued to threaten following the goal. In the 20th minute freshman
Megan Santa Cruz delivered a through ball to junior
Lindsey Turner who played Detrizio at the top of the box, but could not connect for the strike. With 10 minutes remaining in the first half, the Cougars once again made quick, connecting passes to break down the Husky midfield. Junior
Reese Tappan played an aerial ball to the attacking third, where senior
Brianna McReynolds nearly got her head to a ball off the bounce before the UW goalkeeper controlled it.
Returning from the break and hunting the equalizer, Detrizio got more involved in the attack, smashing her first look on target from a tight angle to force a save. With the Cougs putting numbers forward and settling into halftime adjustments, UW took advantage of the counter. A free kick from midfield was fended off by the Cougar backline, but the clearance was recycled back into the box by the Huskies. The low, driven cross went untouched to the back post where Thomason finished the brace.
Washington State continued to press forward with its most aggressive flurry of opportunities in the final 20 minutes. Detrizio had three quick shots around the 70th minute when her first of three strikes was blocked. The Arizona senior got her head to a cross moments later, pushing it just over the crossbar. Detrizio followed with a strong strike from a tight angle that forced UW into one of its six saves in the match.
With Friday night's result, the Cougar soccer season concludes. The WSU side will return to action in the spring for training and scrimmages.
Stat of the Match
Detrizio put up a season-high eight shots with three on target, all coming in the second half.
