PULLMAN, Wash. — Magda Jehlárová finished with three blocks to become the NCAA's rally-scoring era leader in career blocks (752), and 11th-ranked Washington State (23-7, 13-6 Pac-12) overcame a tight fourth-set loss to win in five sets, 3-2, over No. 18 Arizona State (25-6, 13-6 Pac-12) Wednesday in Bohler Gym. Playing against her former team,
Iman Isanovic registered a team-leading 13 kills and a pair of aces, including clutch points down the stretch to close out a close fifth-set win for the Cougs.
Arizona State led the fifth, 9-7, when the first of four three for Isanovic in set five sparked a 5-0 run for Washington State. Isanovic tallied two kills and one block assist during the Cougars' 5-0 spurt that turned a two-point deficit into a three-point lead. A crowd of over 1,600 on hand for the mid-week day match in Bohler erupted after a Sun Devils' service error — their 15th of the match —led to Washington State's first match point opportunity. Jehlárová later closed the match with her 10th kill on the afternoon.
Argentina Ung led the Cougars in digs with 14 on the afternoon, and also added four kills, 40 assists and a pair of blocks.
Pia Timmer tallied five early aces at the service line, moving into second all-time for her career (146), while also falling just three aces shy of the WSU all-time record for a single match. The Cougars' middles
Lana Radakovic and Jehlárová combined for 19 kills with only two errors between the two, while Jehlárová tied the NCAA's rally-scoring career record with the 751st block of her career late in Wednesday's home contest.
Washington State owned a .360 hitting percentage as a team in the opening set, and earned a 4-2 edge in aces as the Cougars led by as many as eight in a first set that finished as a 25-18 WSU win. After the Sun Devils responded with a .565 hitting percentage (13-0-23) in an error-less second set, WSU answered back with .429 hitting (12-3-21) as a unit in the third.
Katy Ryan led WSU with four kills while Jehlárová and Radakovic combined for six kills to help the Cougars move back in front behind another 25-18 set win.
A low-efficiency fourth set for both sides that saw both teams collect three total blocks, ultimately finished in a slim 25-23 win for the Sun Devils. The former Sun Devil, Isanovic, proved to be the difference in the fifth, as the fifth-year grad transfer led both teams with four kills in set five.
