CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Washington State women's soccer team (9-5-3, 2-4-3) tied the Oregon State Beavers (3-8-6, 0-6-3), 2-2, Thursday night at Lorenz Field. WSU freshmen
Reagan Kotschau and
Naomi Clark scored equalizing goals in the first and second half to earn the draw against the Beavers in Corvallis, Ore.
Oregon State scored the opening goal in the 29th minute, courtesy of McKenna Martinez. The goal came after a flurry of Washington State shots, including a pair of early strikes from Cougar senior
Margie Detrizio that forced early Beaver saves.
Less than five minutes later, the Cougars equalized when freshman
Reagan Kotschau delivered a right-footed strike from the top of the area, into the far-post upper corner. Kotschau netted her fourth goal of the season when fellow freshman
Megan Santa Cruz kept her feet with a defender on her hip and laid the pass off to Kotschau for the finish.
Santa Cruz earned her second assist of the year to bring the Cougars level in the half. WSU continued to find opportunities in the attacking third, firing off 11 first-half shots.
Returning from halftime, Washington State continued to control the flow of the game, building up chances through the midfield. WSU's Clark fired off five early shots in the second half, hunting the game-leading goal for the Cougars.
The Beavers again found the back of the net to take the lead. An OSU corner led to a point-blank shot from the Beavers, which Cougar goalkeeper
Nadia Cooper saved with her leg through traffic. Despite Cooper's efforts, the rebound and ensuing goal-mouth scramble fell to OSU's Megan Turi, who finished the leading goal in the 52nd minute.
The Cougars peppered the Oregon State goal throughout the night with 25 total shots and 13 strikes on goal, both team highs in Pac-12 Conference play. WSU's second-half equalizer came in the 78th minute with
Margie Detrizio delivering a ball across the top of the box to Clark. The Colorado freshman took a touch before kissing the shot off the far right post and in for the tie.
Washington State continues its Oregon road trip Sunday, Oct. 29 against the Oregon Ducks. Kick off from Pape Field in Eugene, Ore., is scheduled for 1 p.m. with a free live stream from the University of Oregon.
