No. 4 Cougars back on track after four-set win at UCLA

LOS ANGELES — Fourth-ranked Washington State volleyball (18-3, 8-2 Pac-12) tallied 10 service aces as team and held UCLA (11-9, 3-7) to .191 hitting in a 3-1 (25-22, 26-28, 25-10, 25-20) win on the road Sunday in Pauley Pavilion.  After WSU dropped a tightly contested second set that saw extra points, Pia Timmer led an offensive outburst for the Cougars with 16 kills between the third and fourth sets combined, finishing with a team-leading 19 kills to help the Cougars snap a four-match losing streak to the Bruins.

Magda Jehlárová had a season-high 14 kills while hitting .545 (14-2-22), and Katy Ryan tied her season-high with six blocks and also had a strong match offensively, finishing with 11 kills and three digs.  Karly Basham collected another 15 digs while Julia Norville moved only three shy of 1,000 for her career, finishing with 11 digs to go along with four aces.

Norville grabbed two quick aces out of the gates, moving into ninth all-time at WSU while also helping the Cougars jump out to a 5-1 early advantage.  UCLA eventually climbed back into the set and even held a late three-point lead at 21-18, but Washington State won seven of the final eight first-set points which included another Norville ace as well as two kills and two block assists from Katy Ryan.

Washington State continued to start strong in both the third and fourth sets, going on an 11-2 run behind Lana Radakovic and Julia Norville's serving to start the third set.  Timmer rebounded from a slow start in the first two sets and tallied 10 kills in the third as the Cougars ran away with the set to go up, 2-1.

WSU held onto another early lead through the entirety of the fourth set, earning eight match point opportunities after Jehlárová nabbed back-to-back block assists to reach 700 total in her career.

She later finished off the match with her 14th kill of the afternoon as the Cougars improved to 6-2 on the road this season.
