EUGENE, Ore. - Colton Johnsen placed third with a season-best time of 8:34.33 in the men's 3000m steeplechase while Micaela De Mello broke her own school record to qualify for finals in the women's 100m hurdles (13.07) as the Washington State men's and women's track and field teams wrapped up day two of the 2022 Pac-12 Championships at Hayward Field.
As a part of a loaded field in the men's 3000m steeplechase, Johnsen held onto his form through the first seven laps and fell just short on his final-lap push, clocking a 1:02.7 split over his final lap to hit the podium in third-place. His season-best time of 8:34.33 fell less than two seconds off of the pace as the senior from Bellingham, Wash., ran his fastest 3000m SC since his All-American performance at the 2021 NCAA Championships (8:32.11).
De Mello improved on her program record by .01 in the women's 100m hurdles with a 13.07 to win the second of two heats, qualifying for tomorrow's finals with the second-best time of the day along with teammate
Antonia Buschendorf who finished ninth in prelims with a 13.90. The pair will compete in Sunday's women's 100m hurdles final which is scheduled to begin at 1:40 p.m.
Ben Chappell sat in the top-five following his first two attempts and reached a lifetime best of 63.32m-207-9.0 in the men's hammer throw. With ideal throwing conditions on day two in Eugene, the freshman Chappell started strong and improved on each of his three attempts, finishing 10th overall after closing the day with his new PR.
The final day of competition from Hayward Field for WSU will begin with the Audrey Hughes competing in the women's discuss at 11:30 a.m. Aislinn Overby, currently ranked third in the conference, will compete in the women's high jump beginning at 1:05 p.m. while the final day of track events will kick-off with the 4X100 relays at 1 p.m.
Anna Rodgers struggled to find her rhythm in the women's high jump, but was able to record a mark of 6.02m - 19"-9.0' on her second attempt to finish sixth overall.
