Cougars win four events, reach multiple top-10 marks at Spokane Invitational

SPOKANE, Wash. –The 2022-23 Washington State men's and women's indoor track teams season started off by rewriting the record book and snagging multiple top marks in the country Saturday at the Spokane Invitational.  The Cougars notched 25 personal bests in the first meet of the 2022-23 indoor season and the first of four meets on the Cougs' '22-'23 schedule at The Podium.

Maribel Caicedo (8.29) won the 60m hurdles with the fourth-fastest time in program history and fourth in the NCAA this season while teammate Micaela De Mello (8.32) finished just behind in second while clocking the fifth-fastest 60m hurdles in program history and sixth-fastest time in the NCAA this season.

"
Today was an awesome way to cap-off a great fall season of training. I was very impressed with the way our team prepared and competed today," said Director of Track & Field  Wayne Phipps.

Women's Recap
Caicedo and De Mello both notched a program top-ten in the 60-meter dash while claiming first and second place in the finals heat.  The duo jumped into the top in the country for the event with their one-two finish.

"I'm very excited to see some impactful NCAA marks and all-time WSU marks. A great start to our indoor season and a great set-up for the rest of our indoor season," said Phipps.

Elise Unruh-Thomas won the 300m in a personal-best time of 39.41 and Elena Willems crossed the finish line less than a second behind Unruh-Thomas to take third.  Every Cougar who competed in the 300-meter dash notched a personal best as the event made its debut on Saturday at the two-year-old Podium facility.
Men's Recap
Cougars started off the meet in the win column courtesy of senior Daylon Hicks, who won the men's high jump with a mark of 2.0 meters.  Hicks took his lead over the field from his first jump of the day and never let go.

Ethan Willems followed Hick's standout performance by winning the 300m in 33.92 seconds and freshman Mason Lawyer finished less than a second behind him in 34.88 seconds.

John Parades and Lawyer were neck-and-neck in the 60m-dash until Parades pulled ahead to take second while Lawyer claimed third.  Eight Cougars notched a personal best on the day in the 60 meters with several young Cougs making their collegiate debuts on Saturday.
