Cougars roll past Arizona State to extend home winning streak

Washington State improved to 7-0 at home on the season and won its 12th consecutive match in Bohler Gym dating back to last season.

PULLMAN, Wash. -- Laura Jansen led the Cougars in kills for a third straight match as she finished with 14 while hitting .355 (14-3-31) to help Washington State volleyball (15-6, 7-3 Pac-12) sweep Arizona State (10-12, 4-6 Pac-12), 3-0 (25-16, 25-22, 25-21), Sunday in Bohler Gym.

Washington State finishes off the weekend sweep over the Arizona schools and is now a perfect 11-0 when hitting over .300 as a team as the Cougars had only five attack errors in the entire match, finishing at .379 (41-5-95) hitting as a team in Sunday's win.

"I think we served really tough and were able to get them out of system," said head coach Jen Greeny. "We transitioned really well and Argentina (Ung) had a really great match moving the ball around. Things really went our way and our offense was definitely much better than Friday."

Magda Jehlarova finished with seven kills and three blocks with one solo block to move into sole possession of third all-time in career solo blocks (99), moving past Sarah Silvernail on the all-time list in Sunday's win. Pia Timmer had 13 kills in the match without a single attack error to lead this Cougars with a .464 hitting percentage (13-0-28) in the match. Argenitna Ung had 30 assists with 11 digs while libero Karly Basham finished the afternoon with eight assists to go along with 11 digs.

WSU has now won five straight over Arizona State who came into the match riding the momentum of five-set upset win over 15th-ranked Washington on Friday. The Cougars went five sets against Arizona State in the last matchup in Pullman last November but needed only three in Bohler on Sunday as Washington State also moved to 12-0 after winning the opening set.

Washington State hit a blistering .607 in the first set with 18 kills and only a single attack error as a team to start the match. WSU opened the match on a 6-2 run and later used a 5-0 run to quickly grab the first set point opportunity in the match.

Argentina Ung had a rare mishap on a set to give the Sun Devlis a sideout but Katy Ryan followed up with her third kill of the first set to give WSU the 25-16 first-set win. Washington State went 12-of-16 (75 percent) on sideouts to start the match and held Arizona State to just .226 hitting in set one.

Washington State fell behind for the first time in the match early in the second set but a kill from Jansen opened up a 4-0 Cougar run which ballooned into 7-1 WSU run to give the Cougars a 9-8 advantage.

The Sun Devils later evened the second set at 14-14 but Washington State had only a single attack error for a second-straight set and were able to edge out a late, 21-19 advantage. Jansen added two of her seven second-set kills down the stretch to give the Cougars a two-set lead with the 25-22 win.

WSU's blistering offensive efficiency dropped in the third set but the Cougars were able to benefit from 13 Arizona State attack errors and five Sun Devil service errors in the third set.

Washington State never trailed in the third and had six of its eight blocks as a team, holding off a late ASU charge to close out the sweep with a 25-21 third-set win.

Washington State will play its second straight home weekend next week as it gets set to host seventh-ranked Stanford on Friday, Oct. 28, beginning at 7 p.m., followed by Cal on Sunday, Oct. 30, beginning at 12 p.m.
