Cougars Make it Four Straight to Start Season

PULLMAN, Wash. – Washington State Women's Tennis team ran its season-opening winning streak to four with a 5-2 win over Idaho Saturday afternoon at the Simmelink Tennis Courts at Hollingbery Fieldhouse. Earlier in the day, the Cougars posted a 5-2 win over Eastern Washington.

The Cougars (4-0) opened the day by taking two of three doubles matches against the Vandals (0-1). At No. 1, Idaho's Ke Syuan Jhang and Ines Oliveria rallied form 0-3 down to defeat Michaela Bayerlova and Maxine Murphy 6-3 for the early lead before the Cougars raced back. At No. 3, WSU's Savanna Ly-Nguyen and Elyse Tse improved to 4-0 this season with a 6-2 win over Saffron Dowse and Nicole Horacek while the Cougar's Yang Lee and Fifa Kumhom earned a service break in the final game to defeat Melissa Huchet and Andrea Redondo, 6-4, clinching the opening point.

In singles, Ly-Nguyen quickly made it a 2-0 lead as she defeated Huchet, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 1. Ly-Nguyen improved to 4-0 in dual matches this season and surrendered just eight total games in her three matches this weekend. The lead grew to 3-0 following Kumhom's 6-1, 6-4 win at No. 4 over Redondo.

Idaho fought back as Oliveria rallied for a 5-7, 6-2, 6-2 win over Murphy at No. 2 and Jhang needed three sets to defeat Tse at No. 3, 7-5, 2-6, 7-5.

Lee, the Cougar senior, then clinched the victory as she cruised past Horacek at No. 6, 6-1,6-1, giving WSU the insurmountable 4-2 lead with just one match remaining. WSU freshman Hania Abouelsaad closed out the night with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Dowse for the final margin of victory.

The Cougars are next in action Saturday when they travel to Texas to face No. 22 Baylor.
