TUCSON, Ariz. – Senior Daniel Kolar opened his spring by shooting an even par through the first two rounds of the 40th Arizona Intercollegiate to put him in 14th place on the individual leaderboard, as the Washington State men's golf team opened the 2020 spring season on Monday, Jan. 27.
Kolar was consistent through the tournament's first two rounds, as he shot a 134 (71, 63) on the 71-par course at the Sewalio Golf Club, when play was suspended late in the second round due to darkness. The second round will resume tomorrow, Jan. 28, before opening the third and final round of the Arizona Intercollegiate. The Cougars open Tuesday in 11th place in the 14–team field at +20. WSU opened the day with an opening-round team score of 288, then shot a 274 in the second before play halted.
In the first round, Kolar hit two birdies on the front nine, then held at even through the entire back nine to conclude the opening round with a 71. In the second round of play, the senior once again caught fire in the front nine and sank three birdies. He was shooting a 63 in the second round before play was suspended, and he will begin Tuesday just one stroke behind ninth place.
Three strokes behind Kolar is freshman Tianyu Wu. After carding a two-over-par at 73 strokes through his first 18 holes of play, Wu fired in two birdies in his second round to put him at one-over-par at 64 for the round before the delay. Wu opens Tuesday in a tie for 28th with a score of 137.
Seven strokes behind Wu is fellow freshman Christian Yanagi. After shooting two-over-par (73) in his first round, Yanagi shot eight-over-par at 72 with two holes remaining in the second round to put him in at 63rd. Tied for 67th is senior Nicklaus Chiam, who carded an 11-over-par at 153 through 17 holes in the second round. Freshman Yuya Eguchi carded a 12-over-par at 154 and is tied for 70th with two holes yet to play in the second round.
Arizona leads the tournament with a score of 558 (-10), six strokes ahead of Baylor. Individually, Trevor Werbylo from Arizona is in first place after he tallied a five-under-par 136, one stroke ahead of Washington's Henry Lee and Mississippi State's Garrett Johnson.
