Volleyball Sweeps Right Through Portland
September 06, 2019 | Volleyball
PORTLAND, Ore. – Washington State volleyball continued play at the North Portland Marriott Invite Friday evening, with a three-set victory over tournament host Portland.
Set scores from the match were: 25-17, 25-17, and 25-17 in favor of the Cougars (4-1).
This nonconference match between the Cougars and the Portland Pilots (3-2) was a stalemate throughout the early periods of play in set number one, with a total of 10 ties up until 13-13. Washington State finally found the correct rhythm and posted a run of 4-0 with kills from Magda Jehlarova and Alexcis Lusby to capture a sizable lead. WSU built yet another run late in the opening set, as six straight points were scored with some help from Portland errors and multiple points scored by Jocelyn Urias. Charity Bradley scored two of the last three points in this set off of kills to take set one at 25-17 overall.
Set number two was all Cougars, as WSU generated a 6-1 lead to begin play, as kills from Jehlarova, and Urias, along with a Penny Tusa ace helped control the pace early. The Pilots slowly began to chip away at that early Washington State lead, but the Cougars remained composed, building small runs throughout the set, fueled by kills from Pia Timmer, Magda, and Charity. WSU made a defensive statement with the final point of this set, as a tremendous block by Lusby and Jehlarova captured the set victory at 25-17.
Momentum most definitely stuck with Washington State as the third set of play got underway, the offensive attack of Urias, Bradley, and Timmer could not be stopped. A 15-9 WSU lead forced a Portland timeout midway through the contest, after another Bradley kill, and a huge block from Hannah Pukis, and Jehlarova. The Pilots failed to recover from the Washington State attack, as multiple 3-0 runs late in set three was too much for UP to handle, as kills from Kalyah Williams and Pukis helped finish off the sweep at 25-17.
STAT OF THE MATCH
Charity Bradley recorded her best offensive match in a WSU uniform tonight with a career-high 11 kills against Portland. Charity also posted a hitting percentage of .381, a kill percentage of .524, and added one block to her overall stat line.
