SPOKANE, Wash. – Freshman
Kyle Manzardo recorded four hits and five Cougars recorded multiple-hit games in a 9-5 nonconference win at Gonzaga Monday evening.
Â
WSU used six pitchers including four freshmen and collected 14 hits to clinch the season series from the Bulldogs for the first since 2011.
Dillon Plew,
Bradley Polinsky and
Danny Sinatro each recorded two hits while
Tyson Guerrero added two hits and pitched the final two innings. Manzardo and Plew each drove in two runs and scored twice. Freshman reliever
Connor Barison earned his first career win after working 1.2 scoreless innings and freshmen righthander
Zane Mills was impressive, retiring all eight batters he faced.
Â
In the second, Manzardo doubled off the wall in left-centerfield,
Collin Montez was hit by a pitch and Guerrero reached with a bunt single. The Cougars took a 1-0 lead as Manzardo came across on a 4-6-3 ground ball double play. Gonzaga answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning, using a pair of hits after a pair of WSU errors to take a 2-1 lead.
Â
In the third, WSU retook the lead with a two-run single down the first base line from Plew and Guerrero extended the lead to 4-2 with a two-out single into centerfield that the GU centerfielder nearly made a diving catch on. The Bulldogs again answered with a run in the third after a walk and pair of singles, cutting the WSU lead to 4-3.
Â
In the fourth, the Cougars pushed the lead to 6-3 after an RBI-triple from Sinatro and a two-out RBI-infield single from Manzardo that scored Sinatro.
Â
In the fifth, WSU reliever Mills came up big after entering the game with bases loaded and nobody out, allowing just one run on a sacrifice fly but ended the inning with a strikeout and ground out to first.
Â
In the fifth, the Cougars added two more runs with the first coming on a fielding error from the GU right fielder that saw Polinsky race around from first base to score after Plew's single was misplayed. A couple batters later, Manzardo picked up his third hit of the game with a single deep the middle that was knocked down by the Gonzaga second baseman but couldn't make a play as Plew scored for an 8-4 advantage.
Â
In the ninth, WSU added a run in the ninth after Manzardo singled to left field, was bunted to second and moved to third after a passed ball before scoring on a ground ball to second that GU threw home but the catcher dropped the ball, allowing Manzardo to score for a 9-4 lead.
