PULLMAN, Wash. – Washington State dropped the second game of the series with Arizona 10-4 at Bailey-Brayton Field Friday evening.
WSU received three hits from
Danny Sinatro, two hits and an RBI from
Andres Alvarez and a solo homer from
Anthony Notaro. Arizona hit a go-ahead three-run homer in the sixth and pulled away with five runs in the ninth to clinch the series.
In the second, the Cougars put runners on first and second and after a pair of wild pitches,
Kyle Manzardo scampered home for a 1-0 WSYU lead. Arizona answered with a two-run homer down the left field line for a 2-1 advantage in the third inning.
In the fourth inning, Arizona appeared to have put a run on the board after an RBI-single but the Cougars appeared to third base and Arizona was called out after missing third base and the run was taken away, remaining 2-1.
In the fifth, Notaro led off the inning by launching the first pitch he saw over the left field wall for a solo homer, tying the game at 2-2. The Cougars later loaded the bases with two outs following a walk, an infield single and a hit-by-pitch and Alvarez worked a walk to bring a run home for a 3-2 WSU lead. The very next pitch got behind the Arizona catcher and Sinatro sprinted home for a 4-2 advantage.
In the sixth, the first two Wildcats reached to start the inning and following a pitching change Arizona used a three-run homer to take a 5-4 lead.
In the seventh, the Cougars put runners on first and second after a pair of two-out singles, forcing a pitching change but the threat was ended with a fly out to left, preserving Arizona's 5-4 advantage.
In the eighth, WSU saw Montez walk and later move to second base but was stranded after a new Wildcat reliever ended the threat with a groundout for the final out in the inning.
In the ninth, Arizona broke things open with five runs on six hits to push the lead to 10-4.
