SALT LAKE CITY – Washington State saw its one-run lead slip away as Utah hit a three-run homer in the seventh inning and took the series-opener 6-4 at Smith's Ballpark Thursday afternoon.
The Cougars received multiple-hit games from
Danny Sinatro,
Andres Alvarez,
Kyle Manzardo,
Collin Montez and
Jared Thurber while
Rob Teel also drove in two runs.
In the first, Utah used a two-out two-run single into centerfield for a 2-0 lead but the Cougars answered with two runs of their own in the second inning. Manzardo singled to centerfield,
Collin Montez followed with a double down the right field line and Teel chopped a single back up the middle to even the game up at 2-2.
In the third, both teams loaded the bases with two outs but both threats were turned away. The Cougar threat was ended by a strikeout and the Utah threat was ended by a nice backhand play from Alvarez at short, who made the long throw to get the Ute hitter at first.
In the fourth, Utah took a 3-2 lead with an RBI-double into left centerfield but WSU again answered. In the fifth, Alvarez singled to centerfield, stole second and came around to score on Manzardo's double, tying the game at three.
In the sixth,
Garrett Gouldsmith pulled a leadoff single through the left side and
Jared Thurber followed with a double down the left field line. After a Utah pitching change, Sinatro pulled a double into the right centerfield gap to score Gouldsmith for a 4-3 Cougar lead.
In the seventh, Utah put two runners on with a bunt single to third and a "hit by pitch" before the next batter pulled a pitch just over the right field wall 315 feet way for a three-run homer and a 6-4 lead.
In the eighth, WSU received two-out singles from
Jared Thurber and Sinatro to put runners on first and second with two outs. Following a pitching change, Utah ended the threat with a strikeout, preserving a 6-4 advantage.
