OREM, Utah – Washington State collected a season-high 18 hits but saw its lead slip away late in a 20-13 nonconference defeat to Utah Valley Tuesday evening.

The Cougars received three-hit games from
Danny Sinatro,
Kyle Manzardo and
Jack Smith while
Garrett Gouldsmith tallied three RBI and
Brody Barnum hit a three-run home run.

Utah Valley took advantage of three Cougar errors and seven wild pitches throughout the night and rallied for a 13-5 sixth-inning deficit with three runs in the sixth and eight more runs in the seventh.

In the first, Sinatro led off the game with a ground ball single up the middle,
Andres Alvarez followed with a single off the pitcher, both moved up on a passed ball and one batter later Manzardo punched an RBI-single the other way through the left side to make it 1-0 Cougars.

In the bottom of the inning, UVU used three hits, botched rundown and an error to push three runs across in the inning for a 3-1 advantage.

In the second, the Cougars erupted for six runs highlighted by four two-out RBI-singles for a 7-3 lead. WSU sophomore starter
Michael Newstrom worked scoreless second and third innings before the Cougars pushed four more runs across in the fourth highlighted by a three-run homer from Barnum.

In the sixth, the Cougars loaded the bases with two outs in the sixth and Gouldsmith delivered a two-run single back up the middle for a 13-5 advantage. In the bottom of the inning, Utah Valley used a three-run homer to cut the WSU lead to 13-8.

In the seventh, Utah Valley loaded the bases with nobody out and used a pair of RBI-singles and a wild pitch to cut the lead to one. A dropped fly ball allowed the tying run to score and the next hitter pulled a single through the right side for a 14-13 UVU advantage. The Wolverines added two more runs on an RBI-single up the middle and a sacrifice fly for a 16-13 lead.

In the eighth, the Cougars put two runners on but were turned away after a pair of groundouts.
