Cougars Hold 17th at Conclusion of John A. Burns

Washington State men’s golf completes its second tournament of the spring season.

LIHUE, Hawai'i - The Washington State men's golf team finished 17th in the John A. Burns Intercollegiate hosted by Hawai'i at Wailua Golf Course Saturday. 

The Cougars shot 878 (+14) throughout the three-day tournament, five strokes behind UC Santa Barbara in 16th. No. 11 Arizona State (-24, 840) took the victory on the island. No. 20 Texas A&M (-21, 843) took second and No. 2 Duke (-19, 845) took third, swapping spots from the day before.  

All other ranked teams landed in the top-10 with No. 32 (-18, 846) in fourth, No. 33 UNLV (-13 851) in fifth, No. 48 St. Mary's (-11, 853) in sixth, No. 49 Arizona (-6, 858) in seventh and No. 24 BYU (-4, 860) tying for ninth. 

Two other teams shot under par; Northern Colorado (-5, 859) and Long Beach State (-4, 860), placing eighth and in a tie for ninth respectively. Grand Canyon was the only team to shoot even with a three-round score of 864. Grand Canyon placed 11th. 

The top-3 was tightly contested. No. 15 Peter Kuest of BYU will head home with the tournament win after shooting a 206 (-10) three-round score. Kuest finished just one stroke ahead of Texas A&M's Walker Lee (-9, 207) in second. Zach Smith (-8, 208) out of UC Santa Barbara finished in third, just one stroke behind Lee. 

Junior Daniel Kolar (+2, 218) led the Cougars, placing in a tie for 48th. Two strokes behind Kolar was junior Nicklaus Chiam (+4, 220) in a tie for 57th. Seniors Grant Cole (+6, 222) and AJ Armstrong (+8, 224) placed in ties for 72nd and 79th respectively. Junior Scott Redelsperger was just three strokes behind Armstrong with a three-round score of 227 (+11) in a tie for 87th. 

The Cougars will return to the green, in March in the Bandon Dunes Championship at Bandon Dunes Golf Resort at Bandon Ore. The three-day tournament will be Sunday through Tuesday, Mar. 10-12.

T57 Nicklaus Chiam: 78 (+6) + 70 (-2) + 72 (E) = 220 (+4) 

T72 Grant Cole: 75 (+3) + 75 (+3) + 72 (E) = 222 (+6) 

T79 AJ Armstrong: 76 (+4) + 73 (+1) + 75 (+3) = 224 (+8) 

T87 Scott Redelsperger: 78 (+6) + 77 (+5) + 72 (E) = 227 (+11)
