PULLMAN, Wash. – Washington State freshman Magda Jehlářová added an incredible accolade to her already stellar Washington State volleyball career, as she was named the 2019 American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) National Freshman of the Year as was released Wednesday. Magda was also tabbed as a Second Team AVCA All-American selection for her fantastic freshman season.
The middle blocker from Prerov, Czech Republic, is the first student-athlete in Washington State University Athletics history to earn a national freshman of the year award as she posted one of the best volleyball seasons in a Cougar uniform during the 2019 campaign. Along with earning a second team AVCA All-American selection, earlier this month Magda was named the AVCA Pacific North Region Freshman of the Year, just the second WSU Volleyball player to earn that award, with Kyra Holt being selected in 2013. She concluded her first year in a WSU uniform with 180.0 total blocks, finishing fourth in the nation in the stat category. Magda finished seventh overall in the nation in blocks per set as well with 1.46.

Magda recorded a statement performance in the final regular season match of the year in a five-set win over No. 9 Washington, leading the Cougs with 12 total kills, a hitting percentage of .333, and 10 total blocks for her first career double-double as well.
The Cougs saw the 2019 season wrap up in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament against No. 20 San Diego, falling to the Toreros 3-1 in the Honolulu region. During her final performance as a freshman for the Crimson and Gray, Magda posted eight kills, and eight total blocks, leading WSU both offensively and defensively in the contest.
