In Case You Missed It
PULLMAN, Wash. – Putting on a defensive exhibition, the No. 17 ranked Washington State soccer team (5-0-0) came up with their third shutout of the young season, holding visiting Idaho (2-4-0) goalless on their way to a 3-0 win at home at Lower Soccer Field. The Cougars dominated the Vandals holding them to just four shots in the game, all of which came in the second half. Senior
Maegan O'Neill came up with the would-be game-winner late in the first half, converting a header in the 37' off a corner kick from her classmateÂ
Maddy Haro. The duo hooked up three times in 2017, as O'Neill grabbed her first goal of the year after returning from injury the game prior at Nebraska. With the defense clamping down on the Vandals, the offense continued to press forward, adding to their lead in the 70' on a well-placed strike from
Morgan Weaver that snuck past the keeper to trickle in. Weaver made three defenders miss before hitting a low knuckler off the Vandal 'keeper and in for her third goal of the year. The Cougs were not done year as Washington State netted its third goal of the night to put the game out of reach in the just six minutes later off the first collegiate goal of freshman
Hailey Smith's young career. The first-year Coug chased down a deep punt from goalkeeper
Rachel Thompson before beating two defenders and the keeper to find the back of the net.
