June 07, 2018 | Baseball
SAN FRANCISCO – Seven Washington State Baseball student-athletes received Pac-12 Conference All-Academic honors, including two first-team selections, the conference office announced Thursday.
Â
A.J. Block and Collin Maier were each named to the first team, the first time WSU has had two first-team selections since Jason Monda and Collin Slaybaugh were named to the first team in 2014. Cal Waterman was named to the second team while Blake Clanton, Danny Sinatro, Scotty Sunitsch and Ryan Walker each received honorable mention. The seven selections are the most under head coach Marty Lees and most by WSU since eight earned all-academic honors in 2012.
To be eligible for selection to the academic team, a student-athlete must have a minimum 3.0 overall grade-point average, be a starter or significant contributor, and have completed at least one year in residence at their current institution.Â
Block, a sophomore lefthanded pitcher from Bellevue, Wash., earns his career all-academic honor after posting a 3.77 GPA while majoring in computer science. Block appeared in 21 games this past season and recorded 48 strikeouts in 44 innings.
Â
Maier, a redshirt-senior righthanded pitcher from Billings, Mont., earns his first career Pac-12 All-Academic accolade after producing a 3.92 GPA while earning his bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering. Earlier this spring, Maier was named to the CoSIDA Google Chrome Academic All-District 8 First Team. Maier appeared in 21 games out of the bullpen, recorded 12 strikeouts in 21 innings and picked up a win in relief in his only season with the Cougars.
Â
Waterman, a sophomore catcher from Bend, Ore., earns his first career all-academic honor after posting a 3.52 GPA while majoring in finance. Waterman appeared in 35 games, made 26 starts behind the plate and recorded one double, one home run, 11 RBI and finished the regular season fifth in the Pac-12 with 12 baserunners thrown out attempting to steal.
Â
Clanton, a senior designated hitter from Clinton, Okla., earns his first career all-academic honor after posting a 3.37 GPA while earning his bachelor's degree in accounting. Clanton earned All-Pac-12 honorable mention after leading the Cougars with a .350 batting average and 35 RBI. Clanton also finished second on the team with 13 doubles and 10 home runs.
Â
Sinatro, a sophomore outfielder from Sammamish, Wash., earns his first career all-academic honor after posting a 3.42 GPA while majoring in marketing. Sinatro appeared in 41 games, making 33 starts in centerfield and recorded three doubles, two home runs, 10 RBI and led the team with nine stolen bases.
Â

The 2018 All-Pac-12 honorable mention selection was recently drafted by the Baltimore Orioles after leading the Cougars in wins (6), strikeouts (74), innings pitched (84.1) to go along with the second-best ERA (3.74). Sunitsch was named National Pitcher of the Week and Pac-12 Conference Pitcher of the Week in early April after throwing a no-hitter at Oregon.
Â
Walker, a senior righthanded pitcher from Arlington, Wash., capped his four-year career with his third straight all-academic honorable mention accolade after posting a 3.15 GPA while earning his bachelor's degree in criminal justice.
