PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. - The Washington State men's golf team is tied for 17th at the end of the first round of the Saint Mary's Intercollegiate, Monday at Poppy Hills Golf Course at Pebble Beach, Calif.
The Cougars are tied with Santa Clara, just four strokes behind Toledo with a score of 303 (+19). No. 19 Brigham Young (-13, 271) is currently in first place, followed by No. 8 Pepperdine (-3, 281) in second and Arizona (-2, 282) in third as the only three teams under par in the first day of play.
"We didn't execute really well today," said head coach Dustin White. "When we did hit good shots, we didn't capitalize. We need to learn from it and get to work tomorrow."
Arizona leads all Pac-12 schools through the first day of competition, followed by Oregon State (+2, 286) who is tied for sixth. No. 10 USC finished the day in eighth with a score of 290 (+6), just one stroke in front of ninth place Oregon. Utah is currently in tenth, only two strokes behind Oregon with a score of 293 (+9).
Junior Daniel Kolar led the Cougars on the day, tying for 27th after carding a 72 (+1) in the first round. Next for Washington State is senior AJ Armstrong (+4, 75) who is tied for 57th. Sophomore Ryan Maine (+6, 77) is just two strokes behind Armstrong and is in a tie for 82nd, two strokes ahead of junior Nicklaus Chiam who is tied for 97th. Senior Grant Cole rounded things off for the Cougars in a tie for 100th with a score of 80 (+9).
"There's still 36 holes to play and we have a chance to show what we're made of," said White.
