October 10, 2018 | Swimming
THIS WEEK
Washington State swimming hosts their first home meets of the season Friday and Sunday. The Cougars face No. 1 Stanford Friday at 2 p.m. and Boise State Sunday at 10 a.m. Both meets will be streamed live on wsucougars.com.
ABOUT THE OPPONENTS
No. 1 Stanford is coming off a back-to-back national championship win, having won 23-straight dual meets dating back to the 2014-15 season. The Cardinal last visited Pullman, Wash. in 2015, taking away a win, 149-119. The Cougars claimed four wins against the Cardinal, including two wins from then-freshman Jasmine Margetts. Boise State is coming off of their fourth Mountain West conference championship title. The Cougars last met the Broncos in Gibb Pool Jan. 2011, when the Broncos came away with a 143-119 win. The Cougars completed the meet with five individual wins, including two from former-Cougar and Olympian Rugile Mileisyte. The last time the Cougars beat a ranked opponent was in 2016, when they took away a 143-119 win over then-No. 23 UCLA.
WORDS FROM COACH LEACH
"Having two really good squads come to town is going to help our student-athletes prepare for Pac-12s. Seeing the national champions come to town, we're treating it as just another dual meet and another day to practice all of the little things. We're going to hopefully see some changes to our lineup. It's preparing the same way whether we're playing the national champions or the champions of the Mountain West. I want to see our team get up and race with great energy. I want to see how we handle ourselves when our backs are against the wall."
LAST TIME IN THE POOL
The team placed fourth at the the Chick-Fil-A Invite hosted by Fresno State. The Cougars completed the meet with 25 top-20 finishes, including seven top-five finishes. Freshman Keiana Fountaine earned her fourth individual top-five finish of the season at the invite, placing third in the 200 free and fifth in the 100 free. Senior Jasmine Margetts continued her success in the pool, earning top-10 finishes in the 500 free, 400 IM, 200 fly, 400 free relay, and 800 free relay. Sophomore Taylor McCoy earned top-20 finishes in the 400 IM, 200 IM, and 100 back.

The class is comprised of Sophia Balmaceda (Fremont, Calif.), Emily Barrier (Fort Collins, Colo.), Payton Bokowy (Sandpoint, Idaho), Lauren Burkel (Albuquerque, N.M.), Keiana Fountaine (Tracy, Calif.), Paige Gardner (Walla Walla, Wash.), Haily Hyde (Bend, ore.), and Olivia Tungate (Oak Harbor, Wash.).
