Cougars Challenged Before Defeating Iowa, 5-2

MISSOULA, Mont. – Washington State University faced its first challenge of the 2018 season and responded in strong fashion as it defeated Iowa, 5-2, Sunday morning at the Peak Racquet Club. After capturing the opening doubles point, WSU freshman Michaela Bayerlova extended the lead to 2-0 before Iowa tied the match with a pair of straight-set wins at No. 2 and 3. With the final three matches locked in tight battles, the Cougars responded, with Melisa Ates winning 6-4, 6-1 at No. 6 to set up junior Aneta Miksovska for the match-clincher. After dropping the first set, Miksovska displayed incredible toughness as she rallied to win, 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 (7-5), giving the Cougars the victory. Senior Barbora Michalkova capped the day with a pair of tiebreakers, winning 7-6, (8-6), 7-6 (8-6). With the win, WSU improves to 5-0 on the season.

"I'm proud of the way our team found a way to win today.  Iowa is a well-coached team and I was impressed with their fighting spirit. Aneta played some of her best tennis on the big points today in doubles and singles. We will enjoy this win today and starting tomorrow we will begin preparing for Purdue next Saturday."

  • Junior Tiffany Mylonas saw her winning streak snapped at 14, which was tied for the third-longest winning streak since the 2000 season.
  • Senior Bara Michalkova extended her career-best winning streak to 11 matches.
  • Junior Aneta Miksovska battled throughout her match to earn her second team-match-clinching win of the season.
  • The Cougars are next in action Saturday when they host Purdue at Hollingbery Fieldhouse. Match time is set for Noon.
