PULLMAN, Wash. – Following a pair of singles victories last week, freshman
Michaela Bayerlova was named the Pac-12 Women's Tennis Player of the Week, the Pac-12 Conference announced Tuesday.
Â
Bayerlova, who helped the Cougars to 7-0 victories against Idaho and Montana State, began the weekend with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Idaho's Marianna Petrei, the nation's 39th-ranked player. The win marked the highest-ranked win by a Cougar player since defeating No. 12 Klara Fabikova of California (April 8, 2016). She followed that victory with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Laura Mary of Montana State.
Â
With her two wins last weekend, Bayerlova improved to 7-0 in singles as a collegian. All of her victories have come in straight-sets. Additionally, she added a pair of doubles wins last week, teaming with
Aneta Miksovska.
Â
Bayerlova, the sixth player at WSU under Head Coach
Lisa Hart to receive player of the week honors, missed much of the fall season playing in professional tournaments. She captured the $15,000 ITF Charleston event last October, defeating the world's 427th-ranked player, Montserrat Gonzalez, in the final.
Â
Bayerlova, who is ranked No. 3 among freshmen/newcomers in the most recent ITA ranking, is currently ranked No. 629 in the world after achieving a career-best 583 last July.
Â
The Cougars continue their season Saturday with a pair of matches at Montana.
