BERKELEY, Calif. (Oct. 11, 2025) – Washington State seniors Eva Alvarez Sande and Maxine Murphy each won two singles matches and teamed to win their second-round doubles match to advance to the Round of 16 in both events Saturdays at the 2025 ITA Northwest Regional, Friday at the Hellman Tennis Center.
 
Murphy, the #9 seed, posted straight-set wins in both her singles matches, defeating Oregon's Patsy Daughters 6-4, 6-3 in the first round followed by a 6-2, 6-2 win over Gonzaga's Elizabeth Tindera in the second round. Alvarez Sande, the No. 9 seed, also cruised into the Round of 16 as she completed a 6-0, 6-2 win over Seattle's Lamija Avdic before defeating Pacific's Milena Mayorova 6-0, 6-3 in the second round.
 
Four addition Cougs dropped their first-round matches, as Chisato Kanemaki fell to No. 1 seed Mai Mushika of Cal, 6-2, 6-2, while Martina Puvill fell to Cal's Tiziana Schomburg, 6-4, 6-4. Junior Zali Morris dropped a three-set, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 decision to UC Davis' Polina Marakhtanova while redshirt-junior Yura Nakagawa fell 6-3, 2-6, 7-5 to Waverly Potter of Washington.
 
In doubles play, the duo of Alvarez Sande and Murphy, the No. 2 seed, had little trouble with Cal's Anya Murthy and Naomi Xu, winning 8-3. WSU's #9-seed duo of Nakagawa and Puvill dropped an 8-2 match against Portland's Alaia Rubio Perez and Maria Galatesco.
 
Singles and doubles action continues Sunday in Berkeley.
