THIS WEEK
Washington State will open the season on the road, traveling to San Luis Obispo, Calif. to face Cal Poly Thursday, Sept. 28 at 6:30 p.m. at the Anderson Aquatic Center. The Cougars then will head to Santa Barbara, Calif. to take on UC Santa Barbara Friday, Sept. 29 at 2 p.m.
ABOUT THE OPPONENTS
The Mustangs from Cal Poly finished sixth in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships last season, while the Gauchos finished second. This will be the first meeting between WSU and Cal Poly. The Cougars hold a 1-1 record against UC Santa Barbara, with their last head-to-head competition taking place in the 1997-98 season when WSU won 71-51.
LAST TIME IN THE POOL
Last season, Washington State finished eighth at the Pac-12 Championships. WSU notched school records in the 100 Back and 800 Free Relay at the Pac-12 Championships. Junior Hannah Bruggman notched a school record time of 54.46 in the preliminary round of the 100 back. WSU's 800 free relay team of graduated senior Addisynn Bursch, junior Rachel Thompson, sophomore Jasmine Margetts, and freshman Ryan Falk finished in 7:14.51, surpassing the previous record by nearly four seconds. The Cougars finished the championships with 334 points, ahead of Oregon State (237).
LAST SEASON
Last year, the Cougars had 51 lifetime bests, four school records, and ended with four dual meet wins including a win over UCLA for the first time in program history. WSU was led by junior Jasmine Margetts. Margetts led the team with eight individual wins, three in the win over UCLA and posted three WSU Top-10 times in three different events: 200 Fly, 400 IM, and 500 Free. Returning seniors (Anna Brolin, Hannah Bruggman, Rachel Thompson and Talisa Wibmer) combined for seven relay wins and seven individual wins. Bruggman was a member of seven winning relays, had three individual wins, and holds the school record in the 100 Back. Ryan Falk made a splash in her debut season, finishing with five individual wins. Falk also ended with WSU Top-10 times in two different events: 500 Free and 200 Free. Three members of the 800 Free Relay team (Thompson, Margetts and Falk) return after breaking the school record at the 2017 Pac-12 Championships.
COUGARS MAKE A SPLASH VS UCLA
Washington State's 143-119 defeat over No. 23 UCLA marked the first win over the Bruins in school history…the meet was the 11th dual meet against UCLA in program history…the Cougars claimed 10 of the 14 events against the Bruins.
INCOMING COUGARS
Seven incoming student-athletes signed National Letters of Intent to the Washington State swimming team. The 2017 signing class is comprised of Taylor McCoy (Pullman, Wash.), Maia Petrides (Honolulu, Hawaii), Chloe Larson (Rapid City, SD), Alba Fores (Lund, Sweden), Sam Howell (Austin, Texas), Kelly Morgan (Edmonds, Wash.), Emily Cook (Portland, Ore.), and Mackenzie Duarte (Martinez, Calif. Also joining the Cougars is junior transfer Clothilde Peseux (Besancon, France), coming from University of Idaho.
