BOULDER, Colo. – The Washington State men's golf team finished in 10th place after the final round of play at the Pac-12 Championships, Sunday, at the Boulder Country Club.Â
The tournament was reduced from 72 holes to 54 holes after Saturday play was cancelled due to snowy conditions.Â
WSU shot 16-over par in the third round, an eight-stroke improvement from its second-round score, to finish with a three-round total of 1113 (+63). The Cougars finished six strokes ahead of Oregon State (+69, 1119) and nine strokes ahead of Utah (+72, 1122).Â
"We found out this week that we have some work to do in order to compete for a conference championship," WSU Head Coach Dustin White said. "We need to do a better job of cleaning up our rounds and avoiding big numbers or back-to-back mistakes. It just comes down to executing and truly believing that we have what it takes to mix it up with anyone."
No. 10 Oregon took home the tournament title after leading every round and ended play with a score of 1065 (+15). No. 8 Stanford finished second (+18, 1068), while in-state rival Washington and No. 1 USC tied for third place (+32, 1082). Rounding out the top-five was UCLA, which shot 38-over through three rounds (1088).
Two Cougars finished in the top-30. Freshman Daniel Kolar and junior Brian Mogg both tied for 26th place with a score of 219 (+9). In his first Pac-12 Championship appearance, Kolar improved by three strokes from the first round after shooting 2-over par in the second and third round. Mogg shot even par on the day and tallied four birdies in the final round.
Moving 26 spots up the leaderboard was senior Nick Mandell, who carded the best round of the day for the Cougars. The senior golfer shot 2-under in the final round and tied for 40th place (+13, 223).
"It was great to see Nick finish off his college career with a nice round, and Daniel and Brian played steady for us this week," White said.Â
Finishing two strokes back of Mandell was junior Zach Anderson, who tied for 52nd with a three-round total of 225 (+15). Junior Derek Bayley and sophomore Grant Cole both tied for 68th place (+22, 232).Â
"I have high hopes for this group and I look forward to what they'll bring back next fall."
The conclusion of the 2017 Pac-12 Men's Golf Championships marks the end of Washington State's regular season. The 2017 NCAA Division I Men's Golf Regionals will take place May 15-17, with selections being announced Thursday, May 4, at 9 a.m. PT on the Golf Channel.
