Anderson Leads Cougars to Sixth-Place Finish

Two WSU golfers finished in the top-30 of the Duck Invitational, Tuesday.

EUGENE, Ore. – Highlighted by a top-10 finish from junior Zach Anderson, Washington State men's golf finished sixth at the Duck Invitational, Tuesday, at Eugene Country Club.

The Cougars entered the day tied for seventh with Denver and moved one spot up the leaderboard to take sixth place. WSU shot 11-over on the day and finished with a three-round score of 878 (+26), four strokes ahead of in-state competitor Seattle University.

"Even though the score doesn't show it, we had a stretch of holes at the beginning of the second round that got away from us and cost us a better finish," WSU Head Coach Dustin White said. "We need to get tougher in moments like that to avoid giving shots away. But they hung in there and made something of the round. The course played tough, but we are better than what we showed."

Host-school and No. 10 Oregon continued to dominate the tournament, shooting even-par in the third round for a final score of 8-under par (844). Pac-12 opponents Arizona (+10, 862) and Utah (+15, 867) took second and third, respectively. No. 29 San Diego State finished fourth (+17, 869), while Oregon State rounded out the top-5 (+20, 872).

Three Oregon golfers finished in the top-three of the tournament, including Wyndham Clark who is ranked first in the nation and Norman Xiong who is ranked ninth. Sulman Raza took first place after shooting 8-under (205) through three rounds, while Clark (-5, 208) and Xiong (-4, 209) took second and third, respectively.

Leading WSU was Anderson, who tallied his third top-10 finish of the season after moving seven spots up the leaderboard from the second round. Anderson ended play at 1-over par (214) and tied for 10th place with two other golfers. Senior Nick Mandell shot 3-over in the third round to bring his final score to 221 (+8) and tied for 29th.

"It was good to see Zach have another solid event and build more confidence," White said. "He got a little better each round and played pretty steady."

Junior Derek Bayley finished two strokes back of Mandell to finish in 42nd place (+10, 223), while sophomore Grant Cole tied for 48th after shooting 12-over (225) through three rounds. Sophomore AJ Armstrong and freshman Nicklaus Chiam, who competed as an individual, both tied for 66th with a three-round total of 229 (+16).

Next up, the Cougars travel to El Macero, Calif., Apr. 13-14, to compete at the El Macero Classic.
