THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – Highlighted by senior Nick Mandell's eighth-place finish, the Washington State men's golf team finished fourth (+4, 868) at the Southwestern Invitational, Tuesday, at the North Ranch Country Club.
After shooting 9-over in the final round, WSU finished 15 strokes ahead of No. 15 San Diego State, which tied for eighth. Host-school Pepperdine finished first with a three-round total of 843 (-21), while No. 5 USC took second place (-5, 859). Lipscomb rounded out the top-three (+2, 866), just two strokes ahead of the Cougars.
Mandell, who shot 3-under through three rounds, recorded his second top-10 finish of the season. The senior tied his career-best single-round score of 4-under par in the first round, and finished seven strokes back of tournament-champion Sahith Theegala of Pepperdine.
Juniors Derek Bayley and Zach Anderson finished the tournament in the top-25. Highlighted by an eagle on the front nine in the final round, Bayley tied for 17th place, his fourth top-25 finish of the season (+2, 218). Anderson carded a three-round score of 220 (+4) and tied for 22nd.Â
Sophomore AJ Armstrong shot 3-over in the final round and tied for 43rd (+8, 224). In his first tournament of the spring season, junior Brian Mogg finished one stroke behind Armstrong and tied for 46th place (+9, 225).
Next up, the Cougars travel to Scottsdale, Ariz. to compete at the Desert Mountain Collegiate, March 4-5.
