WSU Volleyball Season Comes to an End at No. 5 Nebraska

WHO WHAT WHEN WHERE…
LINCOLN, Neb. -- The Washington State volleyball team's season came to an end Saturday night as the Cougars (18-16) fell to No. 5 Nebraska (28-4) 25-13, 25-13, and 25-18 before 8,103 fans at the Bob Devaney Sports Center in Lincoln, Neb. Nebraska extended its win streak to 15 matches.
 
Junior Taylor Mims led the Cougars with nine kills with Jocelyn Urias adding five kills. Claire Martin contributed three kills and two blocks. Ashley Brown had 19 assists while Alexis Dirige had seven digs. Nicole Rigoni served the lone WSU ace.
 
The Huskers had 44 kills to 20 for WSU, hitting .300 while holding the Cougars to a .033 hitting percentage. Nebraska led WSU in assists 39 to 19, in digs 49 to 25 and in blocks 10 to 2.
 
WHY & HOW...
WSU Head Coach Jen Greeny said, "First of all, Nebraska is a fantastic team, lots of weapons. They played especially well tonight. Serving especially, I think it was tough for us to get anything going offensively, which made us pretty predictable. They play great defense, have a great block. Tough to beat a very good team like Nebraska with not-great passing. A little disappointed in that, but overall, really, really proud of this team. If you would have said before the season started, we had six players on the floor either in a new position or new to the team, and then three of our starters got hurt, if you would have said at that time, 'Hey you're going to go to the second round of the NCAA
Tournament,' I think we all would have said, 'No way, yeah right.' We fought through that adversity and I am just really proud of the way we made it through that and got to the second round."
 
Junior outside hitter Taylor Mims on how her play changed in the third set said, "I think I was attacking the ball at a higher point than normal. I was looking at the block and just going for the high seam and focusing on hitting the hands and not avoiding the block. I think that worked better in the third set than the first two."
 
On Nebraska's serving Mims said, "I think when they do serve us, they are really tough at serving, and if we don't get a good pass it's pretty obvious where they are going to go to and they can set up faster and we are just very predictable when our pass isn't on so they were able to set up quicker and get their defense behind there faster and be ready to go."
 
Sophomore libero Alexis Dirige on the defensive play in the Florida State win versus the loss to Nebraska said, "I think our block was a lot more disciplined yesterday. With Nebraska's faster sets, and universal play, the block was held a lot of times, and it's hard to dig behind that. Hard to defend overall."

  • Sophomore libero Alexis Dirige became the WSU single season digs leader with 569 digs, passing Kelly Hyder's 565 digs from the 2006 season.
  • Junior OH Taylor Mims' 525 kills this season is third-best in WSU's single season records. And her 1,533 attack attempts is the leader in that category.
  • Junior MB Ella Lajos' .339 hitting percentage is fourth-best in WSU single season records.
  • Redshirt sophomore Jocelyn Urias' 150 block assists is sixth-best, junior Ella Lajos' 141 block assists is eighth-best and junior Claire Martin's 133 block assists are 10th-best  in WSU single season records.
  • In total blocks, Urias' 168 is seventh-best in WSU single season records.
  • Attendance: 8,103
