Cougar Rowing Finishes Fall Season at Head of the Lake
The third varsity eight wins their heat for second-straight year.
SEATTLE – The Washington State University rowing team's third varsity eight won its event for the second-straight year, as the Cougars competed at the Head of the Lake, Sunday morning at Lake Union. The varsity and second varsity crews finished third and second under cold and overcast conditions.
The Cougars opened the day with the varsity eight competing in the Championship Women's 8+, sponsored by Pocock Racing Shells. WSU (coxswain – Jenna Mangiagli, Renee Kemp, Lisa Gutfleisch, Jess Brougham, Kristel Tohu, Paige Danielson, Emily Thomson, Ivy Elling Quaintance, Emily Morrow) competed against Pac-12 opponents Washington, Oregon, and Oregon State in the head race. WSU out-raced both the Bulldogs and the Beavers, finishing the three-mile course at 17.39.401, 14 seconds ahead of Gonzaga and 35 seconds ahead of Oregon State. Washington won the heat, finishing ahead of the Cougars at 17:13.861.
The WSU second varsity eight was also edged by the Huskies in the Women's Collegiate JV 8+. The Cougars (coxswain – Ellie Burg, Jasmine Brake, Jenna Kennedy, Kateryna Maistrenko, Rosalina Torcivia, Lucie Weissova, Kamila Ondrackova, Linnea Davison, Emma Gribbon) competed in a close contest with Washington with just a second deficit at the Fox Point marker. The Cougars settled for a second-place finish with a time at 17.46.822, as Washington won the heat by eight seconds. The Cougars defeated Gonzaga, Portland, and Washington Second Varsity B crew.
Washington State heads into its winter training and will open the spring season, March 24-25 at Mission Bay for the San Diego Crew Classic.
