SPOKANE, Wash.– The Washington State University women's rowing team made the short trip to Spokane to face rival Gonzaga, Saturday morning at the Head of the Spokane at the Spokane River. The Cougars sent three varsity eights and a varsity four to the water at the head race.
"I was pleased with our performance today. The 2 by 5,000-meter format after a hard week of practice kicked our butts a bit today, but we do these sorts of things to build toughness, and we accomplished that," Head coach Jane LaRiviere said. "I'm looking forward to getting back out there Monday. This is a young, fun group and they are embracing the learning curve."
In the first flight of the day, the Cougars rowed their varsity four and three varsity eights.
The WSU varsity eight (coxswain -Jenna Mangiagli, Kamila Ondrackova, Ivy Elling Quaintance, Lisa Gutfleisch, Jess Brougham, Emily Thomson, Paige Danielson, Kristel Tohu, Renee Kemp) set the pace in the first flight with the fastest time of the day, completing the 5000-meter course at 16:50. That time beat out Gonzaga's varsity eight by 18 seconds, who finished second behind the Cougars. The WSU second varsity eight (coxswain - Ellie Burg, Emma Gribbon, Kateryna Maistrenko, Jenna Kennedy, Jasmine Brake, Jessica Norris, Linnea Davison, Sue Yu) had a strong showing, completing the flight at 17:20 to place third.
The WSU third varsity eight (coxswain- Juliet Perry, Emma Barrett, Jordyn Brounstein, Grace Arnis, Emily Vandegrift, Columbe de Rouvroy, Madeline Bingham, Sara Brevick, Frances Guetlich) followed shortly behind GU's second varsity eight at 17:54. The WSU varsity four (coxswain - Paige Schoppe, Miranda Strickland, Megan Kelly, Mahal Johnson, Sophia Rogers) finished a full minute and second ahead of Gonzaga's varsity four, with a time of 19:57.
In the second flight of the day, the Cougars coaching staff made some changes to varsity four, as well as the second and third varsity eight crews.
The WSU varsity eight (coxswain -Jenna Mangiagli, Kamila Ondrackova, Ivy Elling Quaintance, Lisa Gutfleisch, Jess Brougham, Emily Thomson, Paige Danielson, Kristel Tohu, Renee Kemp) finished the flight with a time of 17:17, finishing five seconds behind the place of Gonzaga's varsity eight who won the flight.
The Cougar second varsity eight (coxswain - Isabelle Gahard, Emma Gribbon, Kateryna Maistrenko, Jenna Kennedy, Jasmine Brake, Jessica Norris, Linnea Davison, Sue Yu) completed the course at 17:42, finishing 19 seconds faster than the Bulldogs' second varsity eight crew. They were closely followed by WSU's third varsity eight (coxswain- Chloe White, Emma Barrett, Jordyn Brounstein, Grace Arnis, Emily Vandegrift, Columbe deRouvroy, Madeline Bingham, Sara Brevick, Sophia Rogers) who came in at 18:09.
To round out the varsity portion of the flight, the Cougar varsity four (coxswain- Hannah Welzbacker, Miranda Strickland, Rachael Christman, Miranda Armstrong, Frances Guetlich) put in a solid performance finishing the flight at 20:53.
Washington State will close its fall season Sunday, Nov. 5 at the Head of the Lake, hosted by cross-state rival Washington.
