Volleyball Suffers Heartbreaking Five-Set Loss to No. 15 Oregon

WHO WHAT WHEN WHERE…
PULLMAN, Wash. -- The Washington State volleyball team (13-6 overall, 2-5 in Pac-12) battled but lost in five sets to No. 15 Oregon (11-5, 4-4) Friday night before 972 fans in Bohler Gym. The set scores were 22-25, 25-23, 25-16, 17-25 and 15-13.
Senior Casey Schoenlein led the Cougs with a career-high 17 kills, hitting .275 and three blocks. Junior Taylor Mims had a double-double with 16 kills and equaled her career-high of 15 digs with two aces and three blocks. Jocelyn Urias and Claire Martin both led the match with seven blocks and each added seven kills. Alexis Dirige led the match with 28 digs and served a pair of aces. Penny Tusa had double-double with 23 assists and 15 digs. Ashley Brown had 22 assists.
Abby Phillips' 11 digs was a career-high and she was the fourth Cougar with double-digit digs as WSU out-dug the Ducks 85 to 77.
The Cougars won the blocking battle 14 to 10 but the visitors out-hit the home team 63 to 53 kills. WSU hit .152 on the night but held Oregon to a .175 hitting percentage, nearly 100 points less than the Ducks' season average of .274.
WHY & HOW...
WSU Head Coach Jen Greeny said, "I saw a lot of fight in this Cougar Volleyball team. That was great to see against a tough offensive Oregon team. Our passing was more consistent. They have some good servers and we broke down a few times especially in that third set, but we bounced back in the fourth and stayed with it in the fifth as well."
Asked about Casey Schoenlein reaching a career-high 17 kills tonight Greeny said, "Moving her to the outside with some injuries we have had, she is going to get a lot of opportunities so that was good to see."
Regarding the match Sunday against Oregon State Greeny said, "They are a young team but very good. Senior Mary-Kate Marshall is a fantastic outside hitter. They are a solid team. They can pass well, they can serve well and they can get going offensively so we have to be really solid in all areas of our game."
WSU senior opposite Casey Schoenlein said, "I was somewhat pleased with how I played. There are obviously swings that I wish I could take back and do some more with but at this point in the season I'm just gonna try and swing aggressive. I have nothing to lose. I'm in a new position so I can just hit high and hard and my team has got me covered. We fought hard tonight and it didn't end up our way but if we play like that against every team we are going to be in good shape for the rest of the season."

- WSU held Oregon's offensive leader Lindsey Vander Weide (3.20 kills per set, .226 hitting percentage) to 1.2 kps and a -.057 hpct.
- Sophomore libero Alexis Dirige became the 21st Cougar to reach 800 digs in a career. Dirige has 805 which is 20th-best in WSU all-time.
- Junior Claire Martin has accumulated 328 career block assists, ninth-best in WSU all-time and only 1 block assist away from the No. 8 spot.
- Junior Taylor Mims is averaging 3.69 kills per set in Pac-12 matches this season.
