Cougars Complete First Day at UNLV Fall Invitational

LAS VEGAS – Aneta Miksovska and Ege Tomey each posted singles victories during the first day of play at the 2016 UNLV Fall Invitational tennis tournament at the Fertitta Tennis Complex Friday.

In singles action, Miksovska, a sophomore from Stamberk, Czech Republic, posted an easy 6-2, 6-1 win over South Alabama's Monica Mitta in the first round of the No. 2 Singles draw. Tomey, a freshman from Izmir, Turkey, rallied from a set down to defeat Fresno State's Abbey Watanabe, 5-7, 6-1, 7-6, in the No. 5 Singles draw. Both players advance to the semifinals of their respective flights.

In the top singles flight, Cougar sophomore Barbora Michalkova could not overcome a break of serve in each set as she fell to Fresno State's Katerina Stloukalova, 6-3, 6-3. In the third flight, senior Victoria Matejevic struggled against USC's Rianna Valdes, falling 6-2, 6-1 while another Cougar freshman, Melisa Ates, who won her flight at the Cougar Classic two weeks ago, fell to Fresno State's Georgia Lawson, 6-1, 6-4.

In doubles action the top pair of Miksovska and Michalkova battled the nation's No. 33-ranked team, USC's Zoe Katz and Gabby Smith, but came up just short, falling 8-6 in the No. 1 draw. In the second doubles flight, Matejevic and Ates to an 8-4 win over Fresno State's Katerina Stloukalova and Galina Bykova.

Play resumes Saturday at the UNLV Fall Invitational with both singles and doubles play.
