Cougar Pitching Fires Two-Hit Shutout at Oregon

EUGENE, Ore. – Washington State pitching allowed just two hits in a 4-0 series-opening win over the University of Oregon at PK Park Friday evening.

The Cougars (14-23, 7-12 Pac-12) saw freshman catcher Ty Johnson go 4-for-4 with a pair of RBI to back starting pitcher Damon Jones and reliever Ryan Walker who combined to strike out nine and didn't allow an Oregon (18-17, 7-9 Pac-12) hit until one out in the sixth. Washington State scored three runs in the first and added one more in the third in WSU's first two-hitter since 2009 at Rice.

Trek Stemp led off the game with a two-strike single back up the middle before the Cougars loaded the bases after Weston Hatten walked and Patrick McGrath was hit by a pitch. Johnson stepped in and punched a single through the right side of the infield to score Stemp and Cameron Frost brought home another run with a sacrifice fly to deep right field. Stefan Van Horn followed with a two-out RBI-single through the left side to score McGrath for a 3-0 lead.

Johnson added another RBI-single to make it 4-0 in the third inning, this time back up the middle to score McGrath from second who had walked earlier in the inning.

Jones made the most of the early run support, working three scoreless innings before giving way to Walker to start the fourth. The left-hander Jones recorded three strikeouts and didn't allow a hit.

The right-handed Walker dominated throughout the night, worked to strand a couple Duck baserunners in the fourth before pitching a perfect fifth. He ended the sixth with a 1-6-3 double play, the seventh with a strikeout and retired the side in order in the eighth. In the ninth, Walker closed things out with a flyout, finishing with six strikeouts in six shutout innings and improved to 6-2.

GAME NOTES…Stemp extended his hitting streak to 11 games and his on-base streak to 12…the series continues Saturday at 2 p.m.
