PULLMAN, Wash. – Washington State used a five-run fourth inning to post a 9-3 victory over Arizona State in front of 1,162 fans at Bailey-Brayton Field Friday evening.
The Cougars (9-15, 2-6 Pac-12) recorded 12 hits led by three-hit games from freshmen Mason Cerrillo and Ty Johnson to back a strong start from Ian Hamilton. The junior right-hander picked up his first win of the season after allowing two runs and struck out four in five innings. Sophomore Ryan Walker earned his second save after pitching four scoreless innings of relieve, striking out two and surrendering just three hits. Shane Matheny added two hits and drove in two runs and Justin Harrer walked four times and scored three times.
Washington State pushed a run across in the first inning with a Patrick McGrath sacrifice fly and added another run in the second with a two-out RBI-single by Trek Stemp.
Arizona State pushed a single run in the third and fourth innings to tie things up at 2-2 before the Cougars erupted with a five-run fourth inning. Matheny came up with the big hit, pulling back the bunt attempt and chopping a ball over the charging first baseman and down the right field line for an RBI double. Stemp followed with an RBI-groundout and Cerrillo later lined a double down the right field lone that scored two more. Freshman Jacob Thurber brought home the final run with a double to left-centerfield for a 7-2.
Matheny brought home another run with a squeeze bunt in the seventh and Dugan Shirer drove in another run with a RBI-groundout.
Walker made the lead stand with four scoreless frames to seal up the 9-3 win. ASU starting pitcher Ryan Hingst, the reigning Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week after no-hitting Utah, allowed four earned runs on six hits in three innings.
