Cougars Drop Series-Opener To No. 10 Oregon State

PULLMAN, Wash. – Washington State dropped the series-opener to No. 10 Oregon State University 12-3 at Bailey-Brayton Field Thursday evening.

Trek Stemp led the Cougars (10-20, 3-10 Pac-12) with three hits and Cameron Frost and Weston Hatten each collected two hits as WSU out-hit OSU 10-8. Oregon State improved to 23-7 overall and 6-4 in conference play after jumping out to an 11-1 lead after the first three innings. Stemp recorded his team-leading 12th multiple-hit game and second three-hit game of the season.

The Beavers scored four runs in the first innings with two walks, an error, a bases-clearing double followed by another double. OSU added five more in the second on five hits, four being doubles and tacked on two more in the third and one more in fourth.

Washington State picked up a run in the second with a Jack Strunc RBI-single through the left side and another run in the sixth with an RBI-double from Dugan Shirer. Hatten singled in a run in the eighth for the Cougars.

The Cougars received a boost out of the bullpen from freshman lefthander Ryley Widell who pitched 3.2 scoreless innings, struck out three and didn't allow a hit. The Washington State bullpen combined to not allow a hit over the final five innings. Cougar starter Trenton Dupre took the loss after allowing six earned runs in two innings. Oregon State starter Travis Eckert impved to 4-2 after striking out six and allowing two earned runs on eight hits in seven innings.
