TUCSON, Ariz. – Washington State dropped the rubber game of the Pac-12 Conference series 7-3 at the University of Arizona Sunday afternoon. WSU evened the series with a 6-2 victory Saturday after falling 8-0 in Friday's opener.
The Cougars (10-19, 3-9 Pac-12) received three hits from freshman catcher Ty Johnson. The Wildcats improved to 20-12 overall and 5-7 in Pac-12 play behind a strong starting pitching performance from Bobby Dalbec who allowed three runs on six hits in 7.2 innings. Arizona collected 11 hits while WSU left nine runners on base.
Washington State jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning as Derek Chapman singled with one out and later stole second before coming around to score on Patrick McGrath's two-out RBI single to left field. The Cougars took a 2-0 advantage with another run in the second frame as Cameron Frost was hit by a pitch, stole second and came across on Trek Stemp's RBI-single.
Arizona got to WSU starter Trenton Dupre with three runs in their half of the second, using a pair of two-out RBI-doubles and a wild pitch to take a 3-2 lead before tacking on one more in the third. The Wildcats added two more in the seventh and another in the eighth. The Cougars loaded the bases with two outs in the eighth but Arizona went to its bullpen and ended the threat with a groundout.
Washington State returns home to host Oregon State University next week beginning Thursday at 7 p.m. on the Pac-12 Network.
