PULLMAN, Wash. – Washington State dropped the Pac-12 Conference series opener 10-1 to Arizona State at Bailey-Brayton Field Thursday evening.
The Cougars (8-15, 1-6 Pac-12) received two hits apiece from Trek Stemp and Mason Cerrillo. Sun Devil starting pitcher Seth Martinez went the distance, recording five strike outs while and scattering five hits and allowed just one unearned run that came across in the ninth. Arizona State (15-9, 2-5 Pac-12) recorded nine hits and took advantage for five Cougar errors.
ASU opened the game with a run in the first inning on a wild pitch and added another in the second with a sacrifice fly. Martinez made the two runs stand, keeping the Cougar hitters off balance for most of the night and not allowing a baserunner to second until the seventh inning.
Washington State put two runners on in the seventh as Stemp led off the inning muscling a pitch into centerfield for a base hit and Cerrillo followed one batter later with a single back up the middle. Martinez buckled down for the Sun Devils and ended the threat with a pair of groundouts.
The Sun Devils tacked on five runs in the ninth with three hits and four WSU errors.
GAME NOTES…Stemp extended his hitting streak to 11 and recorded his ninth multiple-hit game…Jacob Thurber made his collegiate debut, starting at designated hitter and recorded his first career hit, a two-out double in the eighth inning…the series continues Friday at 7 p.m. on the Pac-12 Network.
