Washington State Drops Series-Finale at No. 14 UCLA

LOS ANGELES – Washington State received three hits from senior Patrick McGrath in an 11-2 defeat to No. 14 UCLA at Jackie Robinson Field Sunday afternoon.

Trek Stemp opened the game with a single back up the middle and was bunted up to second before McGrath came through with a two-out double into left centerfield that scored Stemp for a run in the first.

The Bruins pushed three runs across in the bottom half, using two hits, two walks and two wild pitches for a 3-1 advantage. UCLA added another in the second despite not recording a hit in the inning, using two walks, a sacrifice bunt and a sacrifice fly to make it 4-1.

Mason Cerrillo opened the third by a pulling a hard-hit ball into right field for a single and McGrath added his second double of the day, lining a pitch down the left field line to put runners on second and third. UCLA threw out Cerrillo as he tried to scamper home on a ground ball to third base but the Cougars caught a break as Bruin pitcher Kyle Molnar balked home McGrath.

In the bottom half of the third, the Bruins scored three times, again without a hit in the inning, as a pair of hit batters and walk were followed by a fielder's choice, a double steal and a sacrifice fly made it 7-2. UCLA added another three runs in the fourth with a three-run home run and tacked on another in the sixth for an 11-2 victory.

Cougar lefthander Scotty Sunitsch pitched well, striking out six and allowed one run in three innings. UCLA starter Molnar struck out 11, allowed two earned runs and scattered four hits in seven innings. Cougar starter Parker McFadden took the loss after allowing six earned runs on two hits and five walks in two innings.
