EDINBURG, Texas – Washington State pounded out 16 hits and used an eight-run seventh inning to post a 14-3 victory over Prairie View A&M University in the Al Ogletree Classic Saturday. The game was called after the seventh inning due to the 10-run rule.
WSU (3-4) saw eight players record hits led by Trek Stemp's second four-hit performance in the last three games. Stemp also drove in four runs, scored three times and stole two bases. Patrick McGrath tallied three hits and three RBI, Derek Chapman added two hits and three RBI and Dugan Shirer recorded two hits and scored three times. Cougar freshman starting pitcher Parker McFadden picked up his first career win after striking out four and allowing two earned runs in 4.1 innings. WSU pitchers combined to record 10 strikeouts and held Prairie View A&M (2-4) to four hits.
The Cougars jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the opening frame as Chapman reached on an error with one out, stole second and later came home on a Cameron Frost single.
Washington State added three runs in the second after Stemp singled home Stefan Van Horn and Chapman drove home Shirer and Stemp with a base-hit back up the middle for a 4-0 lead. McFadden allowed two Prairie View runs in the third but posted a scoreless fourth before giving way to the bullpen with one out in the fifth.
The Cougars pushed the lead to 5-2 after Chapman singled home Stemp in the fifth before blowing things open in the seventh. WSU started the inning with three straight singles before Jack Strunc singled home a run, Van Horn earned a bases-loaded walk and Shane Matheny brought home another run with a sacrifice fly. Stemp followed with a two-run single to left field and McGrath later cleared the bases with a three-run double to left field to cap the eight-run inning.
