LIHUE, Hawaii – The Washington State men's golf team is tied for third place with Arizona after one round of competition at the John A. Burns Intercollegiate, Wednesday, at Wailua Golf Course.
WSU (+2, 290) is 14 strokes behind No. 7 Texas, leading the field with a total of 276 (-2). Pac-12 competitor California is in second after shooting even par (288) on the day. The Cougars are six strokes ahead of in-state rival Washington and No. 24 Virginia (+8, 296), both currently tied for ninth.
Tied for fifth, junior Nick Mandell leads the Cougars at 2-under par (70). Mandell sits three strokes back of leader Beau Hossler of Texas (-5, 67) after carding three birdies on the day.
“Nick played great golf all day,” WSU Head Coach Garrett Clegg said. “Another great part of the day is that all five guys were in play or close to counting all day.”
A mere four strokes separate the rest of the team. After shooting even par on the day (72), sophomore Derek Bayley is tied for 16th with nine other golfers, one stroke ahead of freshman teammate Aaron Whalen, who is tied for 26th (+1, 73).
Freshman AJ Armstrong is tied for 43rd (+3, 75), while sophomore Zach Anderson is tied for 54th (+4, 76).
“We have a lot of golf left and I'm looking forward to tomorrow's round,” Clegg said.
