No. 66 Cougars Return Home to Face Utah State, LCSC

THIS WEEK: The Washington State tennis team (10-0) looks to improve on their best start in school history as the No. 66-ranked Cougars host a Sunday doubleheader. Washington State begins play Sunday, Feb. 21, against Utah State (3-4) at 10 a.m. The first 50 fans in attendance will receive Pink T-shirts, while free coffee and doughnuts will be available for fans in attendance. The Cougars are then slated to face Lewis-Clark State (2-6), ranked No. 13 in the NAIA coaches' poll, at 5 p.m., with free pizza provided for fans in attendance.


LAST TIME OUT: The Washington State tennis teams improved to 10-0 on the season as the Cougars were on the road for the first time. The Cougars defeated the Memphis Tigers and No. 60 UC Santa Barbara Gauchos in Santa Barbara, Calif. Washington State opened play Saturday afternoon with a dominant 4-0 victory over Memphis. Later that evening, WSU posted a 4-3 win over No. 60 UCSB. The win propelled the Cougars to their best start in school history.


COUGARS RANKED IN ITA POLL: After the 10-0 start, Washington State moves up eight spots to 66th in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association poll. WSU reached a high of No. 52 last season.

 

BASHOTA MAKES HISTORY: Sophomore Donika Bashota's 27-2 record, including a 10-0 mark in dual matches, ties Liudmila Vasilieva (2011-12) for the second-best start in school history. The Lidkoping, Sweden, native opened the fall season with a 15-1 record.


RECORD WATCH: Senior Maria Biryukova looks to climb the WSU all-time wins list. With one more victory, the Moscow, Russia, native will share eighth on the list with Andrea Reisz (1996-99).


MIKSOVSKA OFF TO FAST START: Freshman Aneta Miksovska is 19-3 to start the year, including a 9-0 record in dual matches. The Stramberk, Czech Republic, native's start marks the third-best start for a freshman in WSU history. With one more win, Miksovska will tie Elizaveta Luzina (2011-14) with the second-best start for a freshman with a 20-3 record. Erin Majury (1982-84) sits first on the list with a 27-0 record. Teammate Donika Bashota sits fifth on the list, starting 24-7 last season and went on to win 31 matches, a WSU record for freshman singles victories.

 

ALL-TIME AGAINST UTAH STATE: Washington State will square off against Utah State for only the second time since 1996. In the first meeting, the Cougars defeated the Aggies 9-0.

 

ALL-TIME AGAINST LEWIS-CLARK STATE: Washington State will face Lewis-Clark State for the 20th time since 1980. In 19 meetings, the Cougars are 19-0 all-time against the Warriors. Coach Hart holds an 8-0 record against LCSC during her tenure as WSU's head coach.

 

COUGARS GARNER ITA RANKINGS: Sophomore Donika Bashota earned a No. 120 national ranking in the latest ITA poll. In the first regional rankings of the year, Bashota was named the No. 6 Northwest Regional player after finishing the 2015 fall season with a 15-1 record. Senior Trang Huynh garnered a No. 15 regional ranking following her first fall season of competition posting an 11-6 record.


ROSTER BREAKDOWN: For the 2015-16 season the Cougars will have three new faces to go with five returners. The returning roster includes seniors Maria Biryukova and Lize Leenknecht, junior Victoria Matejevic, and sophomores Holly Monahan and Donika Bashota. New to the squad this season are senior Trang Huyhn, who arrives in Pullman after transferring from Troy, and freshmen Barbora Michalkova and Aneta Miksovska.


COACH HART: Lisa Hart is in her 13th season as the head coach of Washington State. Hart has accumulated 164 wins over her tenure, registering a 13-12 record last season. In 2012, the Cougars went 19-7 as Hart was awarded the Pac-12 Conference Women's Tennis Coach of the Year award.

PARKING AT HOLLINGBERY: Fans coming to Cougar Tennis matches this season can park in the Yellow 1 parking lot located directly south of Beasley Coliseum. There will not be any charge for parking on weekends, and daily passes can be purchased for weekday contests. Another option for tennis fans to park would be the Library Garage. The garage costs $3 for the entire day to park on either a Saturday or Sunday.
