MONTEREY, Calif. – The Washington State men's golf team tied for 10th with in-state rival Gonzaga (+48, 900) at the Saint Mary's Invitational, Wednesday, at Poppy Hills Golf Course.
In the final tournament of the fall season, WSU moved two spots up the leaderboard and shot 12-over in the third round. The Cougars finished 47 strokes back of tournament-champion No. 23 San Diego State which had a total score of 853 (+1). Host-school Saint Mary's placed second (+13, 865) and San Francisco took third (+29, 881).
In his third top-25 finish of the season, sophomore
AJ Armstrong tied for 24th, finishing 13 strokes back of tournament-winner Eduardo Carrete of Saint Mary's (-3, 210). Armstrong shot 3-over in the final round to bring his three-round score to 223 (+10).
Junior
Zach Anderson and sophomore
Grant Cole both tied for 34th after shooting 11-over par (224). Anderson shot 4-over on the day, and Cole carded three consecutive birdies on the front nine in the final round.
Senior
Nick Mandell shot a third round 75 (+4) to tie for 61st place (+19, 232). In his first tournament appearance of the season, freshman
Daniel Kolar tied for 65th with a final score of 235 (+22).Â
Competing as an individual, freshman
Nicklaus Chiam tied for 67th place (+23, 236).
The Cougars will return to the green for the spring season Jan. 23-24, at Tucson, Ariz., for the Arizona Intercollegiate.Â
