PULLMAN, Wash. – The Washington State University women's golf team is in first place with a total score of 581 (+5) through two rounds of play at the WSU Cougar Cup, Monday, at the Palouse Ridge Golf Club. The Cougars are five strokes ahead of Fresno State (+10, 591), in second place.
WSU leads the field of 12, with in-state rivals Seattle (+42, 618) in eighth and Eastern Washington (+43, 619) tied for ninth. Utah Valley's Kalea Heu shot a hole in one on the 16th hole during the second round and CSU Fullerton's Martina Edberg set a tournament record with a second round score of 65 (-7).
“We played awesome last week and carried that experience over to this week,” WSU Head Coach Kelli Kamimura said.
Junior Cherokee Kim is in first place with a score of 138 (-6) after shooting 3-under (69) in each round. Kim leads Edberg by one stroke going into the final round. Kim eagled on the front nine in the second round and carded a total of five birdies on the day.
“Going into the second round, I kept telling myself to hit the fairways and the greens, and that the rest would take care of itself,” Kim said. “I thought my course management was great in the second round.”
Sophomore Bree Wanderscheid, competing as an individual, is tied for fourth with a score of 143 (-1). Wanderscheid shot 1-over (73) in the first round and 2-under (70) in the second round. Alivia Brown is tied for 11th at 3-over (147). Brown, a sophomore, carded eight birdies throughout the day.
Freshman Madison Odiorne made a strong showing in her first two rounds of collegiate-level golf, ending the first two rounds tied for 14th at 4-over (148). Odiorne is competing as an individual.
After staying even with par (72) in the first round, senior Nani Yanagi shot 5-over (77) in the second round to end the day tied for 17th. Fellow seniors Monica Huang (+6, 150) and Rachel Lewis (+9, 153) are each tied for 21st and 35th, respectively. Sophomore Jamie Midkiff is tied for 56th (+16, 160).
“I thought they really played gritty today,” Kamimura said. “We have a special group.”
