WSU Finishes 11th at Saint Mary?s Invitational

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. – The Washington State University men's golf team placed 11th after shooting 17-over par (301) in the final round at the Saint Mary's Invitational, Wednesday, at Poppy Hills Golf Course.

San Diego State won the tournament with a three-round score of 1-under par, 851. The Cougars (+43, 895) finished behind fellow Pac-12 schools Oregon State (+15, 867) in third, and Arizona (+31, 883) in eighth. In-state rival Gonzaga placed 12th, three strokes behind WSU.

“We learned a lot from the week and will be better prepared for our next event,” WSU head coach Garrett Clegg said. “We will get things sorted out and make the necessary changes and be ready to play next week.”

Sophomore Derek Bayley led the Cougars with a top-25 finish, concluding play tied for 23rd, 11 strokes behind winner Sean Walsh (-5, 208) of Gonzaga. Bayley had a strong first round start (-3, 68) and finished the third round 5-over (76), bringing his score for the tournament to 219 (+6).

WSU carded 10 birdies in the final round, including four from senior Evan Omelia. After a first round 73 (+2) and a second round 75 (+4), Omelia shot 5-over (76) in the final round to finish the tournament tied for 38th (+11, 224).

Freshman Aaron Whalen closed out his first collegiate tournament shooting even with par (71) to place tied for 46th (+13, 226).

“It was great to see Aaron play better today,” Clegg said.

For the second time this week, sophomore Zach Anderson eagled on the front nine. Anderson shot 8-over (79) in the third round to finish the tournament tied for 59th (+16, 229). Junior Nick Mandell tied for 67th at 18-over (231).

The Cougars return to Washington to compete at the Husky Invitational, Sept. 21-22, at Cle Elum, Wash., then will host the Itani Quality Homes Collegiate, Sept. 28-29, at Palouse Ridge Golf Course.
