PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. – The Washington State University men's golf team is currently in ninth place after shooting 20-over par (304) in the second round at the Saint Mary's Invitational, Tuesday, at Poppy Hills Golf Course.
WSU trails leader San Diego State (-2, 566) and two other Pac-12 schools. After two rounds of play, Oregon State is in third place (+11, 579) and Arizona is in fifth place (+16, 584). The Cougars lead in-state rival Gonzaga by four strokes.
“We are a young team and we need to learn how to keep our scores reasonable when things aren't going our way,” WSU head coach Garrett Clegg said. “Hopefully we learned a lot from today and will be ready to compete well tomorrow.”
Sophomore Derek Bayley carded two of the Cougars' five birdies in the second round. Bayley is tied for ninth after ending the round 4-over (75) to bring his total through two rounds to 1-over (143).
Senior Evan Omelia is tied for 31st with a second round total of 75 (+4). Through two rounds, the Watford, England-native has totaled a score of 148 (+6).
Three Cougars shot 6-over (77) in the second round. Sophomore Zach Anderson is tied for 40th place (+8, 150), while junior Nick Mandell is tied for 56th (+11, 153) and freshman Aaron Whalen is tied for 66th (+13, 155).
