ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The Washington State University women's golf team placed 14th after finishing 26-over par (902) at the 2015 Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational, Tuesday, at the Championship Golf Course.
In its first event of the fall season, WSU competed against three other Pac-12 schools, including winner Stanford (-20, 856). Oregon tied for sixth (+5, 881), while Oregon State finished 17th (+63, 939).
"I am proud of the way we played this week," WSU head coach Kelli Kamimura said. "The Dick McGuire was a tough field and we held our own."
Sophomore Alivia Brown carded four of the Cougars' seven birdies in the third round. Brown finished the tournament tied for 26th. The Gig Harbor, Wash. native shot 1-under (72) in the final round to bring her total score to 220 (+1), nine strokes behind winner Sarah Cho (-8, 211) of Northwestern, who competed as an individual.
Junior Cherokee Kim carded birdied two holes on the back nine to finish the round 2-over (75). Kim, with a total score of 226 (+7), tied for 45th.
Competing as an individual, senior Monica Huang tied for 50th with a total score of 228 (+9). Huang ended play today 2-over (75).
Fellow seniors Nani Yanagi and Rachel Lewis finished tied for 54th and tied for 64th, respectively. Yanagi closed out the third round 3-over (76) to bring her total score to 229 (+10). Lewis carded one birdie on the front nine in her 6-over (79) third round performance. Throughout all three rounds, Lewis shot 13-over (232).
Sophomore Bree Wanderscheid ended third round play at 9-over, bringing her tournament total to 15-over (234). Wanderscheid finished tied for 69th.
"The team continues to show a lot of growth and I am excited for the season ahead," Kamimura said.
The women's golf team returns to Pullman to host the WSU Cougar Cup at the Palouse Ridge Golf Course, Sept. 21-22.
