Cougars Win at Boise State

Box Score

BOISE, Idaho – The Washington State women's soccer team (3-0-0) remained undefeated this season, defeating Boise State (0-3-0), 2-1, at Boas Soccer Complex in Boise, Idaho, Sunday. WSU junior Nicolle Marlow earned her first-career goal on a game-winner in the second half.

“I'm happy we got the result on the road,” Cougar Head Coach Todd Shulenberger said. “Being able to grind out a win on the road after giving up a goal is always a positive. We need to keep the ball more secure, and we left some opportunities on the table, but it's good to get the win. We'll get home and get ready for the next match.”

The Cougars opened the scoring in the 17th minute, after freshman Grace Hancock looked to finish on a strong strike from outside the box. The shot rebounded off of the crossbar and to the feet of senior Cara Wegner who poked it into the back of the net to give WSU a 1-0 lead. The goal was Wegner's first of the season, and Hancock was credited with the assist, the first of her career.

The Broncos responded in the 34th minute with a goal from Michelle Reed. The goal was Boise State's first of the season and sent the teams into halftime tied, 1-1.

WSU returned from the break looking to score a second-half for the first time this season. The Cougars did just that in the 53rd minute, as junior Nicolle Marlow netted the game-winner to give WSU a 2-1 lead. Senior Kourtney Guetlein broke free up the left touchline before playing a square pass in to Marlow at the top of the box. Marlow placed the ball in the bottom right corner to earn her first-career goal.

Boise State controlled most of the stat sheet, outshooting WSU 14-9, while earning three corner kicks to one for WSU. However, the Cougars capitalized on their opportunities, putting five shots on target to the Broncos' three. Redshirt-freshman goalkeeper Ella Dederick improved to 3-0-0 on the season, picking up a pair of saves in the match.

The Cougars will return to Pullman, Wash., before traveling to Missoula, Mont., next Friday, Sept. 4 to face Montana at 4 p.m. (PT).
