BRADENTON, Fla. – Freshman Alivia Brown of the Washington State women's golf team concluded play at the 2015 NCAA Division I Women's Golf Championships, Sunday. Brown fired her best score of the championships with a third-round 76 (+4) at the Concession Golf Club. The Gig Harbor, Wash., native finished tied for 114th place (+30, 246).
Brown notched her best round of the championships, Sunday, carding two birdies on the par-72, 6,468-yard course. Starting on the No. 10 tee, Brown finished 3-over on the back nine, before improving to 1-over on the front nine. After a slow start, the freshman finished even with par on her final 12 holes, and closed the round with seven-consecutive pars.
“This has been an amazing week,” WSU Head Coach Kelli Kamimura said. “Alivia played great today. To come out here in tough conditions and have such a solid round was awesome. It's a great experience for her to be here and know she can play with the best amateurs in the world.”
The conclusion of the third round marks the end of Brown's freshman year. Brown's season scoring average of 74.74 is the lowest by a freshman in Washington State history and the fifth-best season average by any Cougar in school history. Brown qualified for the national championships as one of 12 individuals after finishing in sixth place at the NCAA St. George Regional, becoming the first WSU golfer to qualify for the national championships as an individual.
The conclusion of the third round was delayed, Sunday, due to darkness with six teams left to complete the round, Monday morning. The top 15 teams and the top nine individual not on an advancing team qualified for a fourth round of stroke play, Monday morning.
“I know this experience motivates Alivia and pushes her even more,” Kamimura said. “It gives her more fire to reach her full potential. It's been an exciting ride and we're looking forward to the future."
