PHOENIX, Ariz. – Wes Leow's RBI single in the 10th inning scored P.J. Jones with the games long run as Washington State edged No. 12 Arizona State, 1-0, in extra innings Friday at Phoenix Municipal Stadium.
Following nine innings without a run, Washington State (28-24, 10-16) broke through in the 10th as Jones drew a one-out walk and move to second on a wild pitch. One out later, Leow pinch hit for Jack Strunc and lined a 1-1 through the left side, scoring Jones for the eventual winning run.
In the bottom of the frame Ian Hamilton came on in relief of Cougar starter Joe Pistorese and retired all three Arizona State (31-19, 16-10) batters he faced to record his 13th save of the season, tying him for the Pac-12 lead. It also marked WSU's first extra-inning win in five games this season.
While Leow provided the offense, it was Pistorese who kept WSU in the game. The senior scattered five hits, all singles, while striking out six over nine innings to improve to 8-4 on the season.
First pitch was delayed 90 minutes due to weather and once started turned straight into a pitchers dual between Pistorese and Arizona State's Brett Lilek. Both were in command as Pistorese retired the first nine men he faced before a leadoff walk to open the fourth. Lilek retired the first eight before getting out of a bases-loaded jam by striking out Ian Sagdal.
For the game the Cougars managed just two hits, Leow's game-winner and a fourth-inning single by Ben Roberts.
Lilek went seven innings, allowing one hit while striking out 11, though he did not factor into the decision. Darin Gillies worked the final three innings, allowing one run on one hit as he fell to 2-4 with the loss.
With the series tied at one, the rubber game will be Saturday with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m. The game will be televised by the Pac-12 Networks.
