Pistorese Gets Win in 3-1 Victory over Oregon

PULLMAN, Wash.Joe Pistorese worked seven 1/3 innings and Cameron Frost had a pair of hits, including a key RBI in the sixth, as Washington State rallied for a 3-1 victory over Oregon Saturday night at Bailey-Brayton Field.

Pistorese started for Washington State (26-22, 9-14) and retired the first 11 men he faced before surrendering a two-out single to Mitchell Tolman in the fourth. The senior southpaw ran into trouble in the sixth as Jakob Goldfarb opened the inning with a double then came home one-out later on a Tolman single to give Oregon (28-22, 10-13) a 1-0 lead. The inning ended when Tolman was thrown out trying to steal home.

The Cougars answered back in their half of the frame as Wes Hatten led off with a single to right. Following a wild pitch and sacrifice off the bat of Ian Sagdal, Frost's single through the left side plated Hatten and tied the score at 1-1. The Cougars took their first lead of the game when Frost came around to score on a two-out single down the right field line off the bat of P.J. Jones for the 2-1 advantage.

That was enough for the Cougar pitching staff. Pistorese retired one batter in the eighth before giving way to Sam Triece with one out and a runner on second. Triece retired the only man he faced and Matt Bower came on to retire Tolman and erase the threat.

WSU added an insurance run in the eighth as Sagdal had a one-out single and came around to score on a wild pitch by Duck reliever Cooper Stiles.

Ian Hamilton came on to work a 1-2-3 ninth to record his 12th save of the season as the Cougars evened the three-game series at one apiece. Pistorese ended his night going seven 1/3 innings, scattering seven hits and one run while striking out four to improve to 7-4 on the year.

Oregon starter David Peterson suffered the loss as he fell to 4-6 after going seven 1/3 innings, allowing three runs, two earned, on six hits with nine strikeouts.

The series concludes Sunday at Bailey-Brayton Field. First pitch is scheduled for 12:05 p.m. and will be televised on the Pac-12 Networks.
